Possibilities of a sustainable policing within the building could reduce the carbon footprint of Plymouth College of Art. My meeting today with George Dexter the financial Director of the college indicated that there was a need for a cultural and behavioural change within the make-up of the college. Although technological changes can be made to reduce the carbon footprint including building management solutions where rooms can be shut down from a central point, the real danger is these changes take time and development. To make a quick a noticeable response to the issue we need to act, or a select group with interest in sustainability needs to be formed to police this cultural change in energy reduction.

About a week or so ago I had the idea. Take the G-8 Summit then the G-12 these groups inhabited by major countries to form stronger opinions and make progress. I want to start a committee that takes a representative from each course to form a sustainable council within the college. This will thus give a contact point from various courses back to the main nerve centre of the college. The committee would be responsible for policing the actions of other students within the college.

Other developments include the go ahead for working the college into the Sustrans Bike Links to Schools scheme, enabling the college to build on their green transport plan. The plan is to link sustrans initiative for the development of Plymouth's cycle ways to schools. With PCA having nearly 83% under 18, it registers as a 6th form college allowing the future development of the colleges green transport links to be subsidised up to 80% match funding.

George Dexter also mentioned that there would be a possibility for an MA initiative for a sustainable committee to be developed within the college. the first project set on the MA being the reduction of CO2 has acted like a bug and has substantially changed my practice toward the current climate of reduction.

The CO2 Reduction Day is near, to be precise next Friday, it's going to be an all day event in the college foyer taking the results from the on-line survey and representing them in the form of an animation and with some information boards on why? when? how? including the government initiative for reduction and the cause for funding. the presentation will also include the future of reduceco2now! mine, Richard's and Alastair's new company and how we will proceed to impact upon the college as sustainable thinkers.

On the cards, an event or events. I aim to pick up where I left off in Studio 11 running another bring your own biro and producing its first publication. There is also a possibility for an event using the centre of Plymouth as my gallery. I would like to invite a selection of sustainable companies and designers to have a market in Plymouth launching a Sustainable market day demonstrating the issue of reduction across Plymouth and further a field putting Plymouth on the map.

Also with this I would like to call a cycling/walking/and public transport day with tours of Plymouth and afar around this day a critical mass in the evening and an event which will surround this. However these are just a few thoughts at the moment and will be researching to develop these activities.

Today was the first session of the Ma creative entrepreneurship. I feel today was very productive, allowing the scene, to be set. The surroundings suggested and the environment considered. I am already excited about the proposition, of being able to collaboratively design the private study space the chance to consider identity as a group. Through reading wikinomics, this week it suggests that collaboration is the key.

On the cards this week; I have been invited to re-visit the events that I ran in the college during last year. 'Bring Your Own Biro II' is on the agenda and possibly some new collaborations with some of the staff at Plymouth College of Art, New developments are to research the possibilities of running my events and look into producing publications on the back of it continuing the legacy. The intention this year is to produce a year-long show real working on facilitating artists and action groups within the city. As a result hopefully producing a colourful future for events based art in Plymouth.

My Name is William Leonard Amery and I am studying on The Ma in Creative entrepreneurship at Plymouth College of Art. This Blog will form the foundations of my two years. The reflective journal will asses my internal skill set and my internal set of attributes. Developing, critically, my core research and practical skills along with a social awareness of the business landscape. Each post will directly link to our weekly sessions and develop a network and conversation around these topics. I intend to invite critical analysis on my featured themes. The blog will also track and map out my journey, and growth as an entrepreneur.

With 'williamreflects.wordpress.com', I will represent the public elements, and publish this journey also challenging the notions of the boundaries between virtual and real. How we share, what we keep private and the mechanics of social networking are the underlining issues I'm concerned in.

'williamreflects', will also feature a comprehensive record of my events and my work as an artist in Plymouth. The challenges and successes will appear on the same plain as a raw approach to hierarchy.

Plymouth Arts Centre has invited artists Sovay Berriman and Steven Paige to curate an exhibition concerning artist-led practice.

The exhibition includes information from artist-led organisations including Royal Standard, Spike Associates, Back Lane West, X-Panel, The Western Alliance, Low Profile, View Point Gallery, Performance Re-Enactment Society, Gloria and Alias.

The galleries will become an information hub about artists operating and active in the city of Plymouth and the UK, presenting the hidden processes of the artist’s studio. Control Point offers artists and audiences an opportunity to consider and examine how to accomplish significance and arm themselves with skills for artistic survival in the current climate, through workshops and talks in the galleries. The imagination and importance of artists’ practice is being laid open for all to experience.

The importance of artist-run practice is that it responds to change, being flexible enough to adapt and react to dominant political or cultural trends (whether for or against it). This has ensured that these spaces have maintained a key position in the mechanisms of the art world.

Steven Paige is an exhibiting UK-based artist, who co-runs a new artist-led space, Back Lane West, in the South West. He has recently completed a digital commission for The Reading Room at Arnolfini.

Sovay Berriman’s studio practice incorporates objects, drawings and texts and an interest in science fiction, gothic literature, and survival. Sovay is also involved in the curation of collaborative projects such as Art + Writing, a programme of seminars at Spike Island, Bristol.

On the 31st of October the day begins with a visit to the Art College to collect the illustrations for the Meal. the kitchen is very much in progress and Justin and Caroline (Chef and Forager) are hard at work. we have the table plan and all to now is make it all happen, Along with Anne-Marie, Jo, myself and James and a few others we laid the room and prepared for an evening of self sufficiency and reduced carbon Foot print.

Hey girls and guys, thanks very much for your support! A really fun day had by all, including the race home afterwards – won by Jim on a Peugeot shopping bike (he hadn’t cycled the event though).

We’re now on the case sorting out the next event, perhaps a Christmas treasure hunt, let us know if you have any ideas.

Plymouth’s first bike rally is about to hit the street. Giro Di Janner is going to be a mild test of endurance and navigation served up with a large dose of fun!

The route has been chosen, the after party venue is being recced – all you need to do is bring a bike, helmet and a sense of adventure.

The event will take place on Sun 27th of Sept meeting at a yet to be announced location, follow the stage by stage route to the grand finale. We are limited to 150 places so first come first served on the day, but feel free to register interest on the Blog.

The launch for the magazine is on the horizon. The first issue will feature writers, photographers, artists and designers as an attempt to boost the cultural status of Plymouth. The aim of the magazine is to bring together many existing organisations and produce a co-operative where the public can view shows and take part in the critical debate of Plymouth's future. The magazine will be on sale from select retailers at a £1. A list of retailers will follow shortly and main website for nom de strip will be up and running shortly. Starting on the 1st of August and running for a month the Duchy Square First Steps Exhibition showcases some of the best graduate work from Plymouth 2009. The show has taken work from Plymouth College of Art and from the University of Plymouth and produced a multidisciplinary show which aims at entertaining all . Statement:

I am an active member of the arts community in Plymouth. I am dedicated to supporting the development and growth of Plymouth’s art scene and have a real passion for artist led activity, running events and participating in curatorial practice. To date I have been involved in working with and supporting a number of arts institutions in the city, including working on exhibition installations with Plymouth Arts Centre and Plymouth College of Art. I have recently been developing a series of public events in collaboration with Neil Rose and Matt Coombe from Café Concrete (Plymouth’s alternative, artist run, monthly sound night).

I would really like to maintain and expand on the links I have already established in Plymouth - continuing to develop my practice as an artist and curator in the city and to realise my ambition to make a positive contribution to the arts community in Plymouth. I would, in particular, relish the opportunity to give something back to Plymouth College of Art.

During the last 9 months I have become a key member of the exhibitions volunteers team, working as a gallery technician. I enjoy the problem solving aspects of this work, presenting work to a high standard, networking, building relationships with professional artists and working as part of a team.

I have broad subject knowledge and have been inducted into all workshop areas of the College. I am a quick learner and keen to learn new skills and further develop my existing skills. I am motivated, reliable and organised - work well as part of a team and independently. I am computer literate.

On behalf of Peoples Republic of South Devon, I give you the opportunity, to contribute to a new publication.
Art and Culture Plymouth is an offshoot of The arts an culture page on www.newsandmediarepublic.com. It will be published and shown on the website along with another opportunity for a pod cast or video feed. I will be selecting five Writers for each fortnightly publication.

Flat Pack is body of work based around my fascination with instruction, the idea that I can make people interact with my work, be involved with the processes of it's construction and it's use led me to the idea of Flat Pack. The idea was born out of a Readers Digest Guide, on how to repair everything !, and an upbringing in an IKEA obsessed home. My background is painting , however i have an overwhelming love of product design and specifically furniture design. The idea of instruction and forced action has developed a bond between these two elements. My interest in the presentation and the curation of work will also play a key role in the final presentation of this work. The work will take the form of a gentleman's guide to viewing art, which will draw homage to slightly chauvinistic slant, that so many of the instructional self help guides i have been collecting have. A series of viewing stations will support the guide, in the form of staircases, ramps and various plinths designed to enhance the viewing of my work. As a suggestion of voyeurism I will also construct staircases at the base of very large walls and dominantly near secret organisations. An element of irony and challenge will support my work as I attempt to change the rules.

Why are we the only city without snow? It seems that everyone else has it. As I sit here soaked through from the daily commute, questions arise on why I put up with the dull concrete exterior of Plymouth City Centre, however it has worked in the past to fuel, what has seemed to be a vast eccentric body of work. Maybe we need to consider if our surroundings do in-fact-have great influence on the art that we produce.
So lets think again, I'm sat here soaked through, freezing cold and bogged down with the shadow of my dissertation deadline looming over me, but lets look on the bright-side the environmental stress I'm undergoing may produce my best painting yet!
